Porter Ranch Gas Leak Lawsuits

News outlets are reporting the Porter Ranch gas leak is the largest natural gas leak ever recorded. After nearly two months into the Porter Ranch gas leak there is still no solution to stop the seeping gas. News outlets are also reporting it's the worst environmental disaster in the United States since the BP Oil Spill in 2010. In late October the Southern California Gas Company discovered the gas leak in Porter Ranch, California. Porter Ranch is a neighborhood 25 miles away from Los Angeles. They discovered the storage facility has been spewing methane gas at a rate of 110,000 pounds per hour. New video was released on Dec 28th, showing the gas leak from the air. You can watch the video of the Porter Ranch gas leak below:

Recently a family in Porter County filed a lawsuit against Southern California Gas Co. and Sempra Energy for failing to relocate them or addressing medical issues from the gas leak. The youngest daughter of the family is said to be suffering from a seizure and upper respiratory symptoms. As of December 29, Southern California Gas officials released a statement saying that a 7th attempt to shut down the gas leak failed.

Residents of Porter Ranch have been complaining of nosebleeds, headaches and the smell of the gas. There have also been Porter Ranch Gas Leak lawsuits filed after many residents needed to be relocated over the holiday season. Two schools in the area also needed to be relocated for the entire semester. In addition to the individual lawsuits that could be filed, businesses in the Porter Ranch may be eligible to file a Gas Leak lawsuit for lost revenue due to the leak. The economic damage lawsuits in the gas leak situation is similar to the BP Oil Spill litigation where businesses along the coast lost billions of damages due to the spill. In the BP Litigation, Brent Coon and Associates won Mass Tort Litigation Department of the Year for it's work filing business and individual claims in the complex litigation.

In a release after the settlement Brent Coon stated, "Our job in this case was not only justice for our client, but to make sure this kind of tragedy NEVER happens again". Brent Coon also created the Remember The 15” Bill, which would have provided increased safety regulations and standards within the petrochemical industry.

In 2014, Brent Coon and Assocites represented the family of Chrystle Rae Wise, who was killed in the DuPont Gas leak. BCA reached a confidential settlement with Dupont in 2015. In the terms of the settlement, BCA mandated charitable donations to the humain society. In addition BCA mandated that DuPont hold a moment of silence on the anniversey of the tragedy for the next 10 years as a reminder of work place safety and standards.
