Paxil, known generically as paroxetine, is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), a type of antidepressant that affects serotonin levels in the brain. SSRIs are the most common form of treating depression. In December of 2005, the FDA issued a warning on Paxil. The FDA cited research linking birth defects, particularly heart malformations, in babies of women who had taken Paxil during their pregnancy.
Paxil related birth defects may include:
- Heart malformations
- Neural-tube defects
- Craniosynostosis
- infant omphalocele
- Club foot
- Lung Defects
- Cleft lip
Research has shown that women who took Paxil during their first trimester were 1.5-2 times as likely to have children with serious birth defects. The FDA has advised doctors not to prescribe Paxil to women early in their pregnancy.
If you have taken Paxil during pregnancy and delivered a baby with birth defects, you may be entitled to a cash settlement. Contact our attorneys now to find out if you have a case.
