There have been recent studies linking PPI Antacid meds including Nexium and Prilosec to an increased risk of kidney failure. Nexium, specificly has been tied to a 20-50% increased risk of Chronic Kidney Disease. The FDA updated the warnings on Nexium in 2014 to include a warning for nephritis, which is kidney inflamation. The Nexium lawsuits that are being filed claim that the manufacturer of Nexium failed to warn both patients and doctors of the possible dangers of Nexium including kidney failure. Had the company properly warned of kidney damage, the patients could have chosen a safer alternative medication.
In April of 2016 the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology published a new study claiming medications like Nexium caused a 96% increased risk of kidney failure and a 26% risk of kidney disease. The same Prilosec study concluded that Prilosec causes a 26% increased risk of chronic kidney disease. The JAMA Internal Medicine also conducted another Prilosec which states that PPI's like Prilosec causes a 20 to 50% greater rish of chronic kidney disease. Prilosec was approved by the FDA in the late 80's as a drug that helped combat GERD or acid reflux disease and also certain ulcers. The company AstraZeneca is the maker of both Nexium and Prilosec. In addition to the risk of kidney disease, there have be reports of other Prilosec side effects including acute kidney injury, acute interstitial nephritis and renal failure
In addition there is a study coming out of Germany that states Nexium has been linked to increased risks of dementia. JAMA Neurology found that PPI's like Nexium, Prilosec, and Prevacid caused a 44% increased risk of dementia in seniors. The study tracked over 73,000 seniors who use these drugs and found dementia side effects.
