GM has recalled over 1.7 million cars due to faulty ignition in a number of it's automobiles. In early Feb, General Motors announced they were recalling approx 3 quarter of a million cars. This initial GM recall included the Chevrolet Cobalt and the Pontiac G5. But on Feb. 24th, GM announced it was expanding it's recall to 1.7 by including the following make and models:
GM has been heavily critiqued after the company admitted that engineers were aware of the issues that caused this recall as early as 2004. Yet it took nearly 10 years later for GM to finally issue a recall of these dangerous automobiles. In documents and depositions stemming from a lawsuit where a Georgia nurse was killed in a car crash, engineers testified that they had already discussed how to correct these defects in 2004. The key part in question on these General Motor car recalls is the ignition switch that can fall into the accessory position while driving the car. If the switch falls in the accessory position the car automatically shuts down the engine along with the brakes, power steering and the airbags. General Motors stated in the recall that drivers with heavy key chains can cause switch to change positions. Or in the car "experiences rough road conditions or other jarring or impact related events.”
GM has already linked at least 13 deaths to the faulty ignitions in these cars. This massive recall has lead federal prosecutors to launch a criminal investigation and congressional probes have also been launched. On March 17th, General Motors CEO Mary Barra in a video taped for GM employees said: "After all, something went wrong with our process in this instance and terrible things happened." General Motor indicated that the mass recall of cars "should start" the 2nd week of April 2014.
